vs. Clarkson University

History

Port Charlotte, Fla. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped a pair of games to DeSales University to open Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action on Saturday.

Stevens (6-7, 0-2 MAC Freedom) and the Bulldogs resumed their game that was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning on Friday, with the Ducks falling 4-3 in 10 innings before dropping a 12-1 decision in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Picking up Friday’s suspended game, neither side was able to score until the 10th inning. The Ducks threatened in the ninth, as Vinnie Stigliano led off with a single and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Chip Krese. After Jackson Wein moved him to third on a groundout, the Bulldogs intentionally walked Dylan Fishbough, who promptly stole second. The threat was squashed on a fly out to left.

The Bulldogs pushed an unearned run across in the 10th, taking advantage of two singles and a throwing error. The Ducks were unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, going down in order.

After a scoreless first inning in game two, the Bulldogs strung together two straight hits to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Stevens leveled the game in the bottom of the third, as Justin Zachery led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Edward (E.J.) Balewitz Jr. Zachery later came around to score, tying the game at one after three.

DeSales regained the lead with a solo run in the fourth before breaking the game open with four runs on four hits in the fifth. The Bulldogs added four more runs in the sixth before Stevens put together back-to-back singles by Griffin Zitko and Garret Wolf, but could not push a run across. DeSales capped the scoring with two tallies in the seventh.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Adam Barrington went 3-for-5 with two runs scored in game one, while Wolf added two hits.
  • The bullpen in game one (Raphael Schneider, Dean Qira, Evan Carrier, Wolf, and Erik Sibbach) combined for 6 2/3 innings of three-hit ball. The five hurlers registered four strikeouts and allowed one unearned run.
  • Wolf went 2-for-3 in the second game.

UP NEXT
The Ducks continue their trip in the Sunshine State on Monday, taking on Clarkson University at 4:00 p.m. in Auburndale, Fla.
