Peter DeBoer put the Maple Leafs and NHL on high alert as the beloved coach has seemingly thrown his name into the market for teams needing a new bench boss – and that spells the end for Craig Berube.
On Leafs Morning Take on Friday, former NHL head coach Peter DeBoer was a guest when of course the topic of his future in the league came up. He’s been linked to a job for months, but seemed to want to keep his distance.
Peter DeBoer’s ‘anything goes’ mentality is a warning sign to the NHL
Well, perhaps there’s been a change of heart, as DeBoer explained on the show that the possibility of him coaching again is not that far off from becoming a reality:
Short, sweet, and to the point, but DeBoer got over in four words what he could have in a hundred. The fact remains now that he becomes the instant target for several teams looking to make a change.
None of those teams need him more than the Toronto Maple Leafs though. He’s got the vision to help younger stars develop, while also properly managing the system and giving the offence actually time to shine.
Plus it sounds like he’s not really going to wait around for a specific timeframe. If Toronto wants to win now, adding him would be a great plan because he is willing to adapt to any situation he’s thrown into.
He hasn’t been out of the thick of coaching as he was an assistant to head coach Jon Cooper during the 2026 Milano Cortina Games so he’s seen how things have gone and got the itch again.
He also has a lot more experience scouting the international level, and could be a huge factor into how Toronto builds their team going forward.
He’s not going to come cheap, but he’s sending a message: Trust in my process, and you’ll see success. It’s something NHL teams would love to have; that utter confidence in being able to win.
An Olympic perspective shift may have given the Maple Leafs the help they need
He has a 662-447-152 record with the Panthers, Devils, Sharks, Golden Knights, and Stars while also being a Conference champion in both the East and West in his career.
Though DeBoer has never won a Cup, he’s certainly gotten his team to the top of the standings, and if it weren’t for a couple unlucky breaks he could be a champion.
His scouting during the Olympics has given him an edge on what makes a complete team, and if he comes in and works with the new management team then he can guide them on adding pieces he knows will make for a winning lineup.
This is an NHL veteran who has seen it all, and just led Canada to a silver medal; getting up close and personal with a lot of different faces.
While DeBoer would be the biggest one to step through the door, there could be a few more who follow him this summer and reshape the Maple Leafs lineup into something a lot more competitive and fun to watch.
