WILLIAMSBURG— The Grocery Outlet will officially open its doors in Midtown Row for shoppers starting on April 9, with a special giveaway for the first 100 people in line.
Grocery Outlet is explained by the company to be an extreme value grocer that strives to have savings and high-quality, name-brand groceries, noting particularly having a selection of natural and organic products. It is also an opportunistic grocer, meaning the stock does rotate based on what can be obtained from supplies such as goods with obsolete packaging. The company says customers save 40-70% compared to a traditional grocery store. Grocery Outlet also accepts EBT.
The company says it chose to open a location in Williamsburg as it had been growing in the east over the past several years and saw an area of opportunity to bring discounted groceries to Virginia as a whole, with a focus on the greater Hampton Roads market.
“When we were looking at communities where we saw an opportunity that we could really serve our customer base and connect, Williamsburg was really inspiring for us,” said Ashley Chaney, the Director of Field Marketing for Grocery Outlet.
The store will open at 8 a.m. on April 9 and will be giving away 100 gift cards to the first 100 people in line that morning, where they have a chance to win between $5 and $500. There will also be a DJ playing music, a reusable bag giveaway, and a formal ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. that same day with members of the Greater Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, local dignitaries, and partners at the Virginia Peninsula Food Bank.
“As a resident of Williamsburg for the last 15 years, I could not be more excited to bring what Grocery Outlet has to offer to my hometown. Prices are high everywhere, and we work hard to bring in good products at deals that actually make a difference,” said store manager Philip Hart. “Because of how we buy, you never know exactly what you’ll find — that’s kind of the fun of it. Some days it’s a brand-name steal, other days it’s something new you didn’t plan on picking up. That treasure‑hunt feel keeps it interesting, but at the end of the day, it’s about giving our neighborhood affordable options and a store they can count on.”
The Grocery Outlet is staffed but says it is still accepting applications.
The Grocery Outlet will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is located in Williamsburg’s Midtown Row at 208 Monticello Ave., where Earth Fare used to be. For more information, please visit the official website.
