INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Eiteljorg Museum will open a new exhibition later this month that brings together a group of Latin American printmakers from across the United States, offering Indianapolis audiences a look at artistic traditions rooted in advocacy, heritage, and cultural identity.
The exhibition, titled “Consejo Grafico Nacional: Latino Printmakers in the United States,” opens to the public Saturday, May 30.
Laura Fry, vice president of curatorial and collections at the Eiteljorg, says the show features two distinct printmaking portfolios created by artists based in Chicago, California, New York, Texas, and Puerto Rico.
“This is an extraordinary show,” Fry said. “These artists have created portfolios that are responding to a specific theme, and they speak to something much larger about the American West and its connections to Latin America.”
The first portfolio, “La Huella Magistral,” translates to “homage to master printmakers.” Artists in this series created images of their mentors and major artistic influences, exploring the legacy of craft and how it carries forward through generations.
The second portfolio, “Los Americanos: Same Equals Different,” focuses on cultural exchanges across the U.S.-Mexico border. Fry said the works examine deep connections between Latin America and the United States, and for many of the artists, the experience of holding multiple identities across both places.
Fry says the medium has a long history as a tool for social change.
“Historically, printmaking was really used to share urgent messages,” she said. “It was a way to advocate for new ideas. And that’s something that this group of artists is carrying into the present.”
The exhibition opens Saturday, May 30, with a free public tour at 11 a.m. led by Sandra Fernandez, director of the Consejo Grafico Nacional. Fernandez will travel from Austin, Texas, for the event.
Following the tour, artist Andy Arana Gomez will lead a printmaking demonstration and hands-on art activity, giving visitors a chance to create their own prints.
The Eiteljorg will also host a free First Friday Block Party on Friday, June 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. The event will feature music, entertainment, games, and guided gallery tours, including access to the new exhibit.
