Giants Select Trent Harris – MLB Trade Rumors

The Giants announced that they have selected the contract of right-hander Trent Harris. The 40-man had a couple of vacancies after the club’s deadline trades. To open an active roster spot, righty Tristan Beck has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Prior to the club announcements, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Harris was likely to be activated.

It’s the first call to the big leagues for the 27-year-old Harris. The Giants signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He has pretty consistently posted strong numbers throughout his minor league career. He has 198 1/3 innings under his belt so far with a 2.68 earned run average. His 8.1% walk rate is a solid figure and he has punched out a really strong 31.8% of opponents.

Baseball America listed him as the team’s #22 prospect coming into the year. In June, FanGraphs gave him the #27 slot. Both outlets highlighted his mid-90s fastball, which plays up due to its cutting action. He also features a sweeper, curveball and split-change.

In an interesting twist, the Giants have been stretching him out lately. He was a reliever throughout his minor league career but his past three outings have been starts. He went three innings in the first one, four in the next, and then three in the most recent one.

The Giants are patching things together in the rotation after trading away Tyler Mahle and Robbie Ray on deadline day. That left Logan Webb, Landen Roupp and Carson Whisenhunt in three spots. They recalled Blade Tidwell to start Tuesday’s game.

Tonight, JT Brubaker is starting a bullpen game. Adrian Houser is an option to log bulk innings. Carson Seymour could be as well but he just threw 37 pitches on Wednesday. As the Giants figure it out, Harris jumps into the mix and will try to convince the brass he should stick around. But since he has a full slate of options, he could also end up getting shuttled back to Triple-A as the club tries to keep fresh arms cycling through.
