LA SALLE REENACTMENT CELEBRATES 50th ANNIVERSARY
A celebration of the 50th anniversary of Elgin-area residents reenacting the La Salle Expedition will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Elgin Public Museum, 225 Grand Blvd. in Lords Park.
The free event will feature a screening of a documentary on the 1976 reenactment in which teacher Reid Lewis led a group of 16 high school students and seven adults on a trek from Montreal to New Orleans, navigating the waterways explorer LaSalle traveled in the 1860s, according to a social media post.
It will also feature ticketed games, a chance to meet crew members, an encampment scene and the unveiling of a new museum exhibit.

HISPANIC HERITAGE MOVIE, EXHIBIT TO DEBUT
“Nuestras Historias: Celebrating Hispanic Culture and Community,” a documentary and related traveling exhibit, will debut at a program taking place from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, in the Blizzard Theater at the Elgin Community College Arts Center.
The event will start with a reception at which people will be able to walk through the interactive traveling exhibit, meet the documentary’s producer and featured community leaders, take part in painting and origami, listen to music by salsa band Proyecto 7 and enjoy light refreshments, according to the Elgin History Museum website.
The movie will be screened at 6:30 p.m. The event is free but reservations are being taken.

“Nutty for Nocturnals,” an evening featuring creatures of the night, will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, at Randall Oaks Zoo, 1180 N. Randall Road, West Dundee.
Zookeeper chats will cover several nocturnal animals, including the fennec fox at 5:30 p.m.; raccoons at 6 p.m.; red foxes at 6:30 p.m.; Virginia opossum at 7 p.m.; and bats at 7:30 p.m., according to the Dundee Township Park District website.

Elgin Police Department’s third annual Viva Elgin! celebration will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Festival Park, 132 S. Grove Ave.

KANE COUNTY CANCELS SATURDAY’S RUSTY RODEO
The Forest Preserve District of Kane County has canceled the Rusty Rodeo scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 15, on the Fox River at Mount St. Mary’s Park, 79 Prairie St., St. Charles, and in North Aurora Island Park, 4 E. State St., North Aurora.
Concerns about safety due to recent heavy rainfall, river flow rates and more storms in the forecast led to the cancellation, according to a social media post.
The program is organized by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, St. Charles Park District, Fox Valley Park District and Friends of the Fox River to enlist public help in removing invasive rusty crayfish from the river.
