A Delta Air Lines flight to Barcelona was diverted and returned to Boston Logan International Airport. The flight from Boston Logan International Airport experienced multiple delays. Instead of canceling, Delta attempted to resolve the mechanical issue. After hours of delays, passengers were finally boarded. The Delta pilot advised customers to get into their seats quickly. The warning was warranted, as the crew faced the risk of being timed out.

Ultimately, the Delta flight was cancelled, adding to its cancellation totals that are double compared to last year.
Although the carrier’s issues at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport were well documented this week, the Boston Logan International Airport flight also left customers frustrated.
Passengers Faced Frustrating Disruptions On A Delta Flight Between Boston And Barcelona
A passenger detailed their experience on a Delta flight between Boston and Barcelona. The travel day started at John F. Kennedy International Airport and ended at Boston Logan International Airport. At that point, the travel was smooth for the Delta customer, though they had noticed the Boston to Barcelona flight was already delayed. The disruptions proved to be a sign of things to come, as the flight kept getting pushed back because of a missing aircraft part.
“By the time we landed in Boston, the flight to Barcelona was already pushed back to 8pm. No biggie. But as we waited, the flight kept getting pushed back further and further, until 12AM! (this is when they should have canceled it). According to the workers, the issue was a missing part that had to be shipped from Atlanta to Boston,” the traveler wrote online in a detailed post.
The delays on the Delta flight to Barcelona continued until 2 a.m., with no cancellation. Finally, customers boarded in the early a.m. after a frustrating experience. However, the situation took yet another turn.
Delta Air Lines Boston To Barcelona Flight Details:
- Flight: DL250
- Departure: Roughly 7:20–7:25 p.m. from Boston Logan International Airport
- Flight time: Approximately 7 hours 15 minutes
- Terminals: Boston Terminal E/Barcelona Terminal 1
As the passengers boarded the flight, the Delta Air Lines pilot warned all travelers to get into their seats quickly. As it turned out, it wasn’t quick enough, even though the aircraft was already moving away from the gate.
Despite The Pilot’s Best Efforts, The Delta Flight Was Canceled
The plane was moving and ready to taxi. Although relief may have set in, particularly for travelers with families, the situation changed.
“I notice as we board the pilot keeps urging us over the intercom to hurry up, and when everyone finally gets situated, I also notice the flight attendants whispering among each other. But the plane is already moving to get ready to taxi, so we must be fine, right? Wrong.”
An hour later, the crews had been officially timed out. The next stage was rebooking the cancelled flight, which, for this traveler, was only available the following day. The Delta customer had more questions than answers following the flight, including why the carrier didn’t cancel hours earlier.
“It is already 3AM at this point. By the time we all race to the rebook area and wait in line, my family was only able to secure tickets leaving from Boston today at 5pm to go to Madrid and then finally transfer to Barcelona, and with all this we miss an entire day of vacation and lose out on the money for one day of the hotel. I am just astonished at the situation, especially as to why we boarded if the flight crew was at risk of timing out?”
Travelers and even a commercial pilot weighed in on Delta’s decision to still try and get the flight to Barcelona. The pilot was commended for their attempt, while this type of cancellation wasn’t deemed out of the ordinary by others.
Reactions To The Delta Air Lines Flight Cancellation
Comments highlighted the situation surrounding the cancellation. The passengers gotten into their seats on time, the flight could have continued to Barcelona.
“Had the plane taken off before the flight crew timed out, the plane continues. Had people boarded and got seated more quickly then your flight would have continued that night. That’s why they tried,” the most liked comment states.
A pilot also chimed in on the matter, stating that Delta wanted to make every possible attempt not to cancel the flight, even if it meant a tight departure due to crews being potentially timed out.
“Company will make every attempt to get the flight out even when the flight crew know it’s extremely unlikely to get off the ground in time. A line to deice is a good example. Basically there is a specific time we need to be taking off or else a crew member onboard would time out in the air enroute, knowingly doing that is against federal regulations and can lead to very serious consequences,” a commercial airline pilot wrote.
Other travelers that have faced similar circumstances took precautions in advance, rebooking a flight online even before the customers got the opportunity to deplane from the Delta flight.
“I was in a similar situation in Keflavik a few weeks ago. But I immediately got on the Delta app and had rebooked my flight before I even had a chance to deplane,” a traveler wrote.
Delta Air Lines has faced many issues this summer regarding its response to weather-related disruptions. However, in this case, at Boston Logan International Airport, the diversion and cancellation were due to a mechanical issue. Passengers faced significant disruption due to the cancellation of the Delta flight to Barcelona.
