DOBSON — Several Surry Community College faculty members, administrators and staff were recently honored during the college’s fall 2026 faculty/staff meeting earlier this month.
Mitzi Poore, who recently retired from the post of lead instructor for Medical and Office Administration, was awarded Surry Community College’s Excellence in Teaching Award for 2026-2027, the highest faculty award given by the college.
Lyndsey Haywood, mathematics instructor, and Melinda Shew, business administration instructor, each received the President’s Award for Meritorious Teaching for 2026-2027.
Tim Hawks, building systems technician II, received Surry Community College’s Distinguished Staff Award for 2026-2027, the highest staff award given by SCC.
Sherry White, career technical education coordinator, received the President’s Award for Meritorious Service for 2026-2027.
Dr. Ashley Morrison, senior vice president/chief academic officer, received Surry Community College’s Distinguished Administrator Award for 2026-2027, the highest administrator award given by SCC. This was the first year that an Administrator Award has been given.
Dr. Darin Cozzens, English, Communication and Humanities division chair, received the President’s Award for Meritorious Administrative Leadership for 2026-2027.
“I am incredibly grateful for the dedicated faculty and staff of Surry Community College. It was a privilege to present Mitzi Poore with the Excellence in Teaching Award, Tim Hawks with the Distinguished Staff Award, and Ashley Morrison with the Distinguished Administrator Award,” said college President Dr. David Shockley. “Each of these outstanding individuals exemplifies the commitment, excellence, and service that define our institution. Together, they represent the true strength and greatness of Surry Community College.”
