The Dallas Cowboys concluded their preseason, and feeling unsettled about their team, added some offensive tackle help. Also, a look at who showed out in the finale and who hurt their chances. In injury news, the Cowboys lose a third-year veteran who was looking to make the team. Then, would the Cowboys put one of the summer standouts on waivers?
Looking for offensive line help, the Cowboys made a trade for a former first-round pick.
The Steelers are sending Jones and a fourth-round pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a future third- and sixth-round pick, sources told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Jones, whom the Steelers selected after trading up for the No. 14 pick, was the team’s starting left tackle in 2025 until he sustained a season-ending neck injury in Week 11 against the Chicago Bears. After a lengthy recovery from the resulting spinal fusion surgery, Jones was cleared to resume football activities at the start of training camp, but he struggled to return to form.
Did the Cowboys get fleeced? Not everyone is happy with the cost of doing business.
For all the criticism Omar Khan has received for the Broderick Jones selection, the Steelers general manager just pulled off something remarkable. To take a tackle who was unplayable because of his medicals and everything Pittsburgh saw in the preseason, and flip that player into a third- and sixth-round pick while only giving up Jones and a fourth, that is tremendous value. I’m still having trouble wrapping my brain around it. We had to check two to three times from multiple outlets to make sure it was true that the Steelers are receiving a third-round pick in exchange for Jones. Not only a third, but a sixth as well.
Two players came through with big games when they needed it most. However, others fell shorts and it could be the end of the line for them with the team.
Cornerback Caelen Carson opened the preseason against Seattle with two opening-drive penalties that eventually ended with the Seahawks’ only touchdown of the night. Carson once again committed a costly penalty against New Orleans that resulted in another score =. Dallas entered the contest with 17 total penalties called on them and were flagged six additional times for infractions against the Saints. Of the 23 total penalties in the preseason, Carson alone has accounted for four, or 17.3% of the total penalties accepted.
The converted linebacker got some unfortunate injury news and he’s going to be out for significant time.
Cowboys outside linebacker Marist Liufau is expected to miss “some weeks” with a fractured forearm and will have surgery as early as Monday, according to Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer. Liufau suffered the injury in Friday’s preseason game against the Saints late in the first quarter while making a tackle. “What a great competitor. He’ll be back.” Schottenheimer said of Liufau.

Don’t ask me to explain the rules; it’s a bunch of complex legalese and people suing each other so that some big college programs can have a better shot at competing in a wild west landscape that seemingly has no actual rules, even though they somehow seem to be taking advantage of them. Hudson’s big outing against the Saints, combined with reports surfacing on Thursday that he was granted eligibility to return to the collegiate ranks and enter the transfer portal, means that the young player could get a major NIL bag from a college looking to kick its morals aside and win some games.
The Cowboys would be wise not to get cute and keep Camden Brown on the roster. If they place him on waivers, he could go bye bye.
Despite his knack for big plays, Brown finds himself deep on the Dallas depth chart. The Cowboys have two of the best wideouts in the game in CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. They’re joined by Ryan Flournoy, who had a breakout season in 2025. There’s also KaVontae Turpin who is their WR4 and primary kick returner.
