SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Three people were wounded in a shooting at an assisted living facility building in South Los Angeles Monday and an employee is in police custody.
Three staff members were wounded, one of them critically, in a shooting that occurred in the lobby of Progressive Home for the Elderly in the 7000 block of Denver Avenue, near 70th Street, according to the Los Angeles Police and Fire departments. A suspect who also worked at the building was taken into custody.
The shooting was reported just before 11 a.m. The victims, described by police as a man in his 60s and two women, one in her 40s and the other in her 70s, were all taken to the hospital. One was listed in critical condition and the other two in stable condition.
LAPD did not immediately release details about the suspect or a possible motive, but witnesses told Eyewitness News that an employee was talking with management when he pulled out a handgun and opened fire on three staff members.
Witnesses also added that the shooter was a custodian at the facility. Police said the suspect was a man in his 60s.
Officers responded within two minutes and found three victims in the lobby with gunshot wounds, LAPD Deputy Chief Marc Reina said at a press conference. At that point, the call was upgraded to possible active shooter incident. The suspect was found on a different part of the building.
Reina said residents stayed in place and everyone is OK.
