Entering his eighth NBA season, Zion Williamson admitted he is not where he wants to be in his career.
Zion Williamson was candid enough to acknowledge that he is not currently where he wants to be in his NBA career.
In the New Orleans Pelicans’ Media Day ahead of the 2026-27 season, Williamson offered a simple and honest assessment of the current stage of his career.
“I’m not where I want to be,” Williamson told reporters when asked how he feels about his ongoing playing years.
“I’m just not where I need to be. I’m not where I need to be. Not where I want to be.”

Zion Williamson entered the NBA as one of the most special talents in basketball.
Chosen by the New Orleans Pelicans as the No. 1 overall pick of the 2019 Draft, the hype was off the charts for Williamson given his immense combination of strength, athleticism, and explosiveness coming out of Duke.
However, six seasons have already passed, and Williamson has yet to have any meaningful and major breakthrough in his NBA career. Injuries and weight issues have limited his potential, and he has yet to make an NBA Playoff appearance with the Pelicans.
Healthy Zion Williamson set to lead Pelicans to contention
Last season’s play at least gives Zion Williamson plenty of hope to finally emerge and live up to expectations.
Williamson played 62 games last NBA season, averaging 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.
Under new head coach Jamahl Mosley, the Pelicans have assembled one of the league’s most promising groups, featuring Dejounte Murray, Trey Murphy III, Herbert Jones, Derik Queen, Jordan Poole, Jeremiah Fears, and Ben Mathurin.
With a healthy Williamson leading the way, New Orleans still has the potential to make a strong push for relevance and make its presence felt in the league.
