As Election Day approaches, community leaders, business groups and residents are set to gather in Little Havana for a town hall Tuesday focused on Amendment 3, a proposed constitutional amendment that could affect homeowners and taxpayers across Florida.
Organizers say the event is designed to help voters better understand the measure before casting their ballots in November.
The discussion will examine how the proposed changes could impact homeowners, local governments and taxpayers statewide. Panelists are expected to take part in a moderated conversation before opening the floor to audience questions.
If approved by 60% of Florida voters, Amendment 3 will significantly alter the state’s property tax structure by:
Lowering Non-Homestead Caps: Reducing the maximum annual assessment increase cap on non-homestead properties (like rentals and commercial buildings) from 10% to 5%.
Increasing Homestead Exemptions: Raising the non-school property tax exemption from the current $50,000 up to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 by 2028.
Supporters argue the measure could provide much-needed property tax relief for Florida residents and businesses. Critics, however, have raised concerns about the potential impact the changes could have on local government revenue and funding for public services.
The town hall begins at 6 p.m. at Miami Dade College’s Padron Campus in Little Havana.
NBC6 will be inside the event and will have continuing coverage of the discussion, including the questions being asked and the concerns being raised by residents as the debate over Amendment 3 continues ahead of Election Day.
