SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – As Hispanic Heritage Month continues a local organization is recognizing Hispanic leaders in the community with their annual gala that celebrates culture and contributions of local Latinos in various sectors such as education, engineering, the arts, and more.
During the Latino Leadership Awards more than a dozen local Hispanic students will also be recognized and given scholarships. More than $20,000 in scholarship money will be awarded Saturday night at Bally’s casino and hotel.
The Hispanic Heritage Association of northwest Louisiana was founded in 2021 and was born when a group of friends recognized a need to help Hispanic people excel.
“As the Hispanic community grows, [so does] the needs for services and connection with local government, organizations and employers, we saw the need for that,” says Marcial Avelar.
The organization was created to help strengthen and develop the Hispanic community across northwest Louisiana creating opportunities in education, business, health, the arts and beyond.
Throughout the year, the association brings people together through beautiful events that highlight the many cultures that make up the Hispanic community; like the Hispanic Heritage Festival and Dia de los Muertos, in addition to educational and business events.
HHA works to make sure the contributions of Hispanic people are recognized as part of the fabric of northwest Louisiana.
“Latino leaders play an important part in our community because they create opportunities, they help assist other young students and entrepreneurs,” says Avelar.
As the Hispanic community continues to grow, the association says its mission does too, they hope to continue the work helping build a stronger future for all Latinos.
