New analysis estimates 13.6 million Latino adults may be income-eligible for the federal program, creating a major opportunity to expand long-term investing participation
NEW YORK, Oct. 13, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Finhabits today released “The Next American Dream: Expanding Latino Participation in Retirement Investing,” its 2026 Latino Power in Numbers report, examining how the federal Saver’s Match could expand retirement investing among U.S. Latinos beginning in 2027.
Finhabits estimates that approximately 13.6 million Latino adults may be income-eligible for the Saver’s Match, which will provide qualifying lower- and middle-income workers with a federal match on eligible retirement contributions.
The potential impact is significant because Latino participation in the U.S. economy has grown rapidly while financial asset ownership continues to lag.
Between 2015 and 2025, Latinos accounted for approximately 8.3 million of the 14.7 million net new jobs created in the United States, or 57% of the total, and today represent about 20% of the U.S. workforce. Median weekly earnings among Latino workers increased from $604 to $951 over the same period.
Yet Latino household wealth remains concentrated in housing. Home equity represents 45.2% of Latino family assets, compared with 19.1% among White families, while investments represent 19.1% of Latino family assets, compared with 36.3% among White families.
“The Saver’s Match could create a new entry point into retirement investing for millions of Latino workers,” said Carlos García, founder and CEO of Finhabits. “The opportunity is not just to open accounts, but to help more families build a second pillar of long-term wealth alongside homeownership.”
Under participation scenarios modeled by Finhabits, consistent retirement saving combined with the federal match could result in an estimated $615 billion to $1.02 trillion in retirement balances over 30 years.
The estimates are illustrative scenarios designed to show the potential scale of the opportunity, rather than forecasts of future assets. They assume annual individual contributions of $1,600, an average federal match of approximately 32%, participation rates of 21%, 28% and 35%, and a 7% annual investment return.
For retirement providers, asset managers, banks, employers and financial technology companies, the findings point to a large opportunity to expand participation by reducing complexity, providing culturally relevant guidance in English and Spanish, and building trust with consumers who may be entering the retirement system for the first time.
