PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Burglars allegedly tunneled through a neighboring office and stole about $70,000 from a Phoenix card shop earlier this week.
Officers were called to Crown Cards at 1 a.m. Monday because of a burglar alarm.
Surveillance video shows three people breaking in through a shared wall to get inside the shop, while a fourth person served as the getaway driver in a white pickup, police said. Police said the three people broke in through a neighboring H&R Block office.
Break-in through neighboring business
“The hole that they created was about, from this height, about a foot and a half wide all the way down to the ground,” David Kim said.
Kim said the people went straight to what they saw in front of them. Roughly $70,000 in cards and personal collections were stolen, including tens of thousands of dollars in merchandise and three children’s binders.
“Here at our shop, we got a plethora of sealed boxes, anything from Pokémon up to sports here,” Kim said.
“Over here is where we have a lot of like the high-end singles and things that we end up packing up at the end of the night now,” he said.
Owners describe personal loss
“A lot of us put our life savings, we put in a lot of time and energy, a lot of investments into being able to open up a shop like this,” Kim said.
“My kid himself, he’s built up a lot of big collection himself, and then his binder was one of the things that got taken from him during the break-in,” he said.
“A lot of our kids would go around and hang out with each other at card shows and things like that. So we found out how we would be able to bring that together, which would be through this card shop,” Kim said.
“It feels very personal,” he said. “It’s one thing when you take something from me, but then when you take something from a person’s child, it hits a little bit different.”
The owners are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests and sharing the surveillance video, hoping it helps prevent another business from being targeted.
Phoenix police said the investigation is still going on.
