BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Paramount LA has been a part of the Boyle Heights community since opening in 1924.
International musicians like Stevie Wonder and Celia Cruz have performed at the venue.
The Paramount is now one of three businesses recognized by a new citywide initiative called HistoricPlaceLA Revealed: Latino Los Angeles.
Frank Acevedo owns the ballroom.
“It cements the importance of historic places for tourism, for community pride, of things in its own backyard,” he said.
Markers will be installed on lampposts outside designated historic landmarks.
Los Angeles City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, who represents District 14, said the goal of the initiative is to highlight contributions Latinos have made to the city.
“I hope that it redefines what L.A. history actually means. To be more inclusive, to actually find out what our local history is here.”
Candelas Guitars is also recognized for helping shape Boyle Heights.
Owner Tomas Delgado said the family-owned shop has been in business for almost 100 years.
“It’s the appreciation and acknowledgment of a family, of individuals, of a community desperate to provide and serve others,” Delgado said.
In addition, El 7 Mares was honored under the new initiative.
The Mexican seafood restaurant has united the community through food for decades.
Judy Carolina Diaz’s parents opened the restaurant.
“It’s an honor. Receiving this marker is an honor. It’s marking my father’s sacrifice to the community, to Boyle Heights, to his family and many more,” she said.
The city plans to unveil historical markers at 140 sites across Los Angeles.
The markers will feature QR codes linking to pictures, information and stories.
