Beyoncé chose to fund Cécred herself after investors pushed to cut research costs, Tina Knowles reveals

Beyoncé has never been one to compromise on her creative vision, and apparently, that philosophy extends to her business ventures.

The superstar reportedly passed on outside investors for her haircare brand, Cécred, after they questioned how much money she planned to spend developing and testing its products. Rather than reduce the budget, Beyoncé decided to finance the company herself.

Her mother, Tina Knowles, who serves as Cécred’s vice chairwoman, shared the story during a conversation at Fortune’s Most Powerful Women Summit earlier this month, according to Complex.

“We didn’t wanna structure it that way,” Knowles explained, referring to the decision to self-fund the business. “We talked to investors in the early stages, but when it got down to them looking at our budgets, the largest part of our budget goes into research and development and testing.”

According to Knowles, prospective investors wanted the company to shift its spending priorities, putting more money toward marketing and less toward the products themselves.

But Beyoncé wasn’t interested in building a brand that prioritized publicity over performance.

“We just decided, she decided, ‘I’m just gonna fund it myself,’ which is crazy expensive,” Knowles recalled, admitting that she questioned whether her daughter understood the financial commitment she was making.

Beyoncé’s response was straightforward: She didn’t want anyone limiting what the company could invest in research and development.

The decision reflects a vision that began long before Cécred launched in February 2024. Beyoncé and her sister Solange grew up around their mother’s Houston hair salon, where Knowles experimented with treatments designed to address the needs of textured hair.

That experience helped shape Cécred’s approach to product development. The brand spent six years developing its formulas before launching, with an emphasis on hair and scalp health across different textures.

And while Beyoncé’s celebrity could have been the company’s biggest marketing tool, she has deliberately taken a different approach.

In a recent interview with i-D, Beyoncé explained that she considers herself Cécred’s founder, visionary and sole investor, rather than its advertising face.

Her goal, she said, was to create products that worked so well that even people who didn’t enjoy her music would want to use them.

The strategy has produced some notable results.

According to Fortune, Cécred’s 2025 debut at Ulta Beauty became the retailer’s most successful prestige haircare launch. The brand has also collected 89 beauty industry awards and expanded into the United Kingdom through Space NK.

For Knowles, who spent years creating treatments for her salon clients, the company’s success is particularly meaningful. What began with a mother experimenting with ways to care for Black women’s hair has grown into an international business.

And for Beyoncé, the decision to bet on herself meant maintaining control over the part of the business she considered most important: the products.
