Latino participation in North Carolina’s midterm elections has already surpassed the total registered in 2022, even before election day, Tuesday, November 3.
According to the State Board of Elections (NCSBE) report published on November 1, with data up to October 31, 96,202 people identified as Hispanic or Latino had voted, compared to 68,071 who voted four years ago. The difference represents 28,131 more voters, an increase of 41.3%.
For Aylén Gómez, 20 years old and a volunteer of New Life Community In vote protection efforts, the participation of young Latinos is a way to represent the needs of their families and those who cannot vote.
Gómez called on his generation to get involved both at the ballot box and in the defense of the vote, to continue the work of those who fought for that right.
“We need to be the next generation to take the step,” he told Enlace Latino NC.
Aylén indicated that this responsibility goes beyond personal benefit: it also implies “looking after the well-being of their communities and recognizing the sacrifices of those who opened opportunities for them.”
