ARLINGTON — Texas Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that right-hander Max Scherzer — who’s made two rehab appearances for Triple-A Round Rock Express in the last week — will make his next start for the major league team.

His exact return date, though, has not yet been finalized.

“It’s good to have him back, I know he’s excited,” Bochy said. “That’s the good news right now.”

Scherzer last pitched 4 and 2/3 innings for Round Rock on Saturday. He threw 79 pitches, allowed three runs on four hits and two walks and struck out eight batters. The three-time Cy Young award winner has made two rehab starts since his most recent shutdown.

Max Scherzer should rejoin Rangers’ starting rotation soon, manager Bruce Bochy says

The 39-year-old said Monday that he felt good following his most recent rehab start and that he can “hopefully” pitch for the Rangers this weekend. He’ll have had five full off days when the Rangers host the Kansas City Royals for their series-opening game on Friday.

“I’m just trying to rejoin the rotation however they want to re-insert me,” Scherzer said.

Scherzer has yet to pitch for the Rangers this season after a bumpy return from offseason back surgery. He progressed well initially and made a rehab start on April 24, but was shut down with thumb soreness that developed into a nerve inflammation issue that spread up his right arm. He, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle could each be back in the Rangers’ rotation by August.
