The California State Fair in Sacramento will allow cannabis sales and consumption in a designated area for the first time in 2024, according to its partner for this year’s fair. Embarc, a cannabis retailer with 15 dispensaries, said Tuesday that this year’s cannabis exhibition hall for fair attendees ages 21 and older will include a 30,000-square-foot consumption lounge where people can try products from farms and brands across the state. Fair attendees will be able to scan QR codes to add products to a virtual shopping basket and buy them at Embarc’s on-site dispensary. “This initiative spotlights the significant role of cannabis in California’s agricultural industry, marking a major milestone in the state fair’s 170-year history,” James Leitz, executive producer of the fair’s cannabis competition and exhibit, said in a release. “Expanding the competition to include all form factors and providing patrons the opportunity to directly engage with and consume winning brands is transformational for public understanding of the plant.”For the past two years, the fair has featured an educational cannabis exhibit and awards competition that highlights the industry. Now people will be able to legally smoke pot at the fair for its 170th anniversary. Embarc’s co-founder Lauren Carpenter said in the release that hosting sales and consumption of the drug will be a “groundbreaking milestone in destigmatization.”Where can you buy weed at the California State Fair? The California Cannabis Experience is set to be open daily during the fair from July 12-28, according to organizers.
