New Jersey Proposes Ban on Gas Leaf Blowers
New Jersey Senate Moves Forward with Gas-Powered Leaf Blower Restrictions
TRENTON, NJ—First, it was your gas car. Then it was your gas stove and gas fireplace. Now, they are coming for your gas-powered yard tools. No, New Jersey, we’re not kidding.
The New Jersey Senate Environment and Energy Committee has approved Senate Bill No. 217 with amendments, targeting the phased elimination of gas-powered leaf blowers in the state. The bill specifically addresses the environmental concerns associated with two-stroke and four-stroke engine leaf blowers.
The legislation mandates that starting two years after its effective date, the sale or distribution of gas-powered leaf blowers with two-stroke engines will be prohibited statewide. Moreover, four years post-enactment, the use or operation of any gas-powered leaf blower with a two-stroke engine will be banned in New Jersey. The restrictions will extend to four-stroke engine blowers in residential areas, limiting their use to specific times of the year outside these zones.
Adding to the bill’s comprehensive approach, it also introduces a tax incentive program encouraging the adoption of electric leaf blowers. The state will offer a tax credit against the corporation business tax, covering up to 50% of the purchase cost, including necessary batteries and charging equipment. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition from gas-powered to electric leaf blowers, aligning with environmental goals.
The bill also defines ‘residential area’ and sets penalties for non-compliance, ranging from warnings for first-time offenders to fines up to $1,000 for commercial entities in subsequent violations. Municipalities are empowered to enact local ordinances that align with or exceed the stringency of this state legislation, though they cannot restrict the use of blowers designed for pesticide application.
This legislative move reflects New Jersey’s commitment to environmental stewardship and public health, addressing noise pollution and air quality concerns associated with gas-powered leaf blowers. The Department of Environmental Protection will oversee the implementation of the bill, ensuring a structured transition to less harmful alternatives.

Traffic Alert: Crash At Garden State Parkway Rest Stop Causing Delays
Traffic Alert: Crash and Utility Pole Incident Blocks Ramp on Garden State Parkway
BLOOMFIELD, NJ – An early morning crash has resulted in a utility pole being knocked down on the Garden State Parkway, causing partial blockage of the entrance ramp to the Larry Doby Service Area. The New Jersey Turnpike Authority reported the incident, which started at 3:03 AM today and was updated at 3:05 AM.
Motorists heading northbound on the Garden State Parkway should expect delays entering the Larry Doby Service Area in Bloomfield. Emergency services are on scene, and efforts to clear the ramp are underway. Drivers are advised to seek alternate routes if possible and to exercise caution when approaching the area.

Gas Prices in New Jersey Still as High As They Were Last Year, White House Touts
TRENTON, NJ – As summer is well underway in New Jersey, vacationers heading to the Jersey Shore can expect more of the same at the gas pump as they experienced last year.
Jared Bernstein, Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers, recently emphasized the stabilization of gas prices over the past year during his discussion on the current economic climate. Despite fluctuations, the price per gallon remains at $3.58, mirroring the rate from a year ago, according to the latest data from the Transportation Research Institute for American Assets (TRIAA).
When President Joe Biden assumed office, gas was significantly cheaper at $2.17 per gallon, highlighting the sharp rise to today’s price. Bernstein acknowledges the financial strain still felt by families but points out the importance of noting the stable price point as a reflection of the administration’s efforts to manage economic pressures effectively.
“Gas and food prices, while still too high, have been relatively flat in terms of gas—same price now as it was a year ago—and have slightly decreased for groceries in the last month by 0.2%,” Bernstein explained. This statement aligns with the administration’s broader economic strategy, focusing on providing relief where possible amidst global economic challenges.
Bernstein, who has served under the Biden administration since January 20, 2021, and recently took over as the Chair of the Council of Economic Advisers on July 10, 2023, continues to advocate for policies aimed at supporting workers and managing inflationary pressures effectively.

Schenectady Man Admits to Illegally Purchasing Shotgun Used in Temple Shooting
ALBANY, NY—Andrew Miller, 38, from Schenectady, New York, has pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to illegally purchase a shotgun, which was later used in a shooting incident outside Temple Israel. The plea was entered in federal court in Albany, announced by U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman and key representatives from the FBI and ATF.
Miller confessed to conspiring with Mufid Fawaz Alkhader between October and November 2023, misleading a firearms dealer into believing he was the legitimate buyer of a Kel-Tec 12-gauge pump shotgun.
The actual intended recipient, Alkhader, was believed to be unable to lawfully purchase the weapon. Miller falsified information on the ATF Form 4473 during the purchase, which culminated in him handing over the shotgun to Alkhader on November 6, 2023.
This firearm was subsequently used by Alkhader in a shooting outside Temple Israel on December 7, 2023. The repercussions of this act led to a swift investigation and legal proceedings against both individuals involved.
Miller is set to be sentenced on October 18, 2024, by United States District Judge Anne M. Nardacci. He faces a maximum of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release post-imprisonment. Meanwhile, Alkhader faces charges related to firearms offenses, though he remains presumed innocent until proven guilty.
