Clean energy diversity is a goal worth pursuing. Here’s why.

The transition to clean energy is essential for our planet’s future and presents significant opportunities for economic growth and development for individuals and communities.

At Walker-Miller Energy Services, we recognize the critical need for diversity in this sector and are committed to advancing inclusion through our workforce development programs. These initiatives are designed to engage Black and Brown communities, providing them with the skills and access to resources and opportunities needed to thrive in the clean energy industry.

Despite a growing emphasis on sustainability, the clean energy sector still needs more diversity.

According to the 2023 U.S. Energy & Employment Jobs Report,, only 8% of the clean energy workforce is comprised of Black and Brown individuals. This statistic underscores the urgent need for more efforts to increase diversity.

This lack of inclusion limits the potential of innovation and ingenuity available through diverse experiences. Actively including historically excluded communities in the clean energy space allows for an equitable approach to driving innovative and sustainable solutions for all as we aggressively work to combat the ravages of climate change.

Walker-Miller’s workforce development programs are tailored to empower individuals and small business owners, providing a pathway to meaningful careers and entrepreneurial success in clean energy.

Two of our flagship programs, the Walker-Miller Clean Energy Academy and the Diverse Contractor Incubator program, are designed with an equity lens, focusing on inclusivity and community impact.

The Walker-Miller Clean Energy Academy is a cornerstone of our workforce development efforts. Participants can earn the Building Performance Institute (BPI) Certification, a nationally recognized credential that ensures the technical knowledge and skills needed to excel in energy efficiency roles.

Through this program, participants can access various career opportunities, from energy auditing to weatherization. Success stories from our program participants illustrate the transformative impact of BPI Certification, turning aspirations into reality and creating a new generation of clean energy professionals.

Our Diverse Contractor Incubator program supports aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners in the clean energy sector. By providing comprehensive resources, mentorship and training, we help individuals turn innovative ideas into thriving businesses.

This program fosters entrepreneurship and contributes to job creation and economic growth within our communities. The Diverse Contractor Incubator program is a testament to our commitment to uplifting Black and Brown communities through sustainable business development.

The impact of such programs is profound. A recent McKinsey study on the economic state of Black America found that businesses led by people of color generate $700 billion annually and employ 4.7 million people in the United States.

However, these businesses often face significant challenges, including access to capital and resources.

According to the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Black and Brown entrepreneurs are three times more likely to be denied loans than their white counterparts, making programs like ours critical for leveling the playing field.

Joining Walker-Miller’s workforce development programs means stepping into a world of empowerment and growth. Participants receive extensive support and mentorship, ensuring they are well-equipped to succeed.

The long-term benefits of these programs extend beyond individual success, contributing to our communities’ overall well-being and prosperity. The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy reports that energy-efficiency jobs are growing faster than average employment across the country, highlighting the timeliness and relevance of our initiatives.

At Walker-Miller Energy Services, we believe clean energy’s future must be diverse, inclusive, and equitable.

By participating in our workforce development programs, Black and Brown communities can take charge of sustainability and innovation, transforming their lives and the broader community. The success of our participants stands as a testament to the power of these programs in creating lasting, positive change.

We invite you to be a part of this transformative journey.

Whether you seek a fulfilling career in clean energy or are an aspiring entrepreneur ready to bring your innovative ideas to life, Walker-Miller Energy Services is here to support you every step of the way.
