TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Fans storming the field not once, but twice, following Arizona State’s big win over BYU on Saturday made for a memorable moment, but it also comes at a cost for ASU.
The Big 12 Conference announced on Tuesday that Arizona State University will receive a public reprimand and a $25,000 fine for the field storming incident.
Conference officials said the action against ASU is in accordance with the Big 12 Conference Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship.
“The safety of student-athletes and all game participants is our foremost priority,” said Commissioner Brett Yormark. “We will continue to work with our institutions on event management policies at all Big 12 venues.”
ASU fans rushed the field as time expired in Saturday’s game, only to be ushered off the turf after a replay review showed 1 second remaining on the game clock. After the game went officially final, fans once again stormed onto the field.
With more than half of the conference’s 16 teams still mathematically alive to make the championship game, the Big 12 will command a lot of attention in the final week of the regular season, with ASU right at the top of the mix.
Next week, the Sun Devils will travel to Tucson for their annual battle against Arizona. The Wildcats have won the last two in the series to snap ASU’s five-year winning streak.
If they both win Saturday, No. 14 Arizona State and No. 17 Iowa State will play for the Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff spot on Dec. 7.
