“It’s hard, it’s really hard, especially competing with big organizations, big stores, big companies,” business owner Jessy Flores says.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Small businesses wait all year long for the holiday season, hoping to attract more shoppers.

On Black Friday, small businesses like Mi Tiendita Munaycha look forward to the holiday shopping season.

The Peruvian Store is located in the heart of Old Sacramento.

“Black Friday and so we’re looking to do something a little different than getting stuck in a huge crowd, number one and or stuck on the computer,” said Mike Coyne, who was shopping at Mi Tiendita Munaycha on Friday.

Coyne said small businesses make for unique gifts for their family and he tries to support them when he can.

At the shop, owner Jessy Flores shares her culture by bringing all of her products from Peru, her home country.

“This is a dream come true since I was a little child in my little town in my country,” said Flores.

Flores added keeping that dream alive while competing with bigger stores and online shopping isn’t easy.

“It’s hard, it’s really hard, especially competing with big organizations, big stores, big companies. And me just here inside of this building, very hidden but I’m trying to do my best. At least to show my kids if you want something go for it,” said Flores.

She’s not the only small business owner trying to keep up with the competition.

As a member of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, she’s offered more resources and guidance.

“For our members, we’re offering additional promotions as we can. So, anyone that has like a special offer or maybe you’re doing a special event in your location, you know send it to us cause we’re gonna spread the word and let people know about it,” said Cathy Rodriguez Aguirre, President and CEO of the Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

She wants customers to make it a point to visit these places so they can keep their doors open.

“For all of us that are celebrating the holidays, and getting together with families, and thinking about where we’re gonna go shopping,  we’re asking that you think about the small businesses that are here too. Because for a lot of them, this will make or break their year,” Aguirre said.

Flores said she’s lucky to have the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on her side.

And because of them, she feels more prepared to take on whatever is thrown her way.

“Better, right now lately, we are getting better, busier, people are knowing more about us,” said Flores.

The Sacramento Hispanic Chamber of Commerce also offers its members tips and guidance on social media and marketing.
