Houston’s new 621 area code — the fifth area code to service the greater Houston area — is set to launch beginning January 23, 2025.
The new code was approved in October of 2023 by the Public Utility Commission of Texas in order to accommodate “continued population growth.” This will not affect existing phone numbers, but once all available 281/346/713/832 numbers are exhausted, providers will begin to assign 621 numbers to new lines.
The PUCT had previously estimated that the city would run out of new phone numbers by 2025. The new area code is supposed to be able to sustain all new phone numbers in the Houston area for the next nine years.
Governor Greg Abbott called the new area code “a testament to the economic strength and quality of life in the greater Houston area.”
The original Houston area code, 713, was first introduced to Houston in 1947. This will be the first new area code introduced since 346 in 2013.
