La La Land in Concert arrives to the 42th Miami Film Festival at Arsht Center on April 9, 2025

Madeline Pumariega President of Miami Dade CollegeMiami Dade College (MDC) has long been recognized as a national leader in education and workforce innovation, fueling Miami’s growth for over 65 years. But our impact extends far beyond the classroom—we’re also a driving force in the region’s flourishing arts scene, shaping South Florida’s dynamic landscape in film, literature, visual arts and performance, essential elements that define a world-class city.

From launching the Miami Book Fair in 1984, widely regarded as the finest literary festival in the country, to presenting an exhibit this year in honor of Cuba’s “Queen of Salsa,” Celia Cruz, MDC’s arts programming reflects the richness and vibrancy of the community it serves.

This month, MDC rolled out the red carpet for its 42nd Miami Film Festival, which opened to a sold-out audience at the legendary Olympia Theater, one of Miami’s iconic architectural landmarks in the heart of downtown. It was an unforgettable experience and opportunity to celebrate Miami’s rich history.

This year’s Festival featured over 200 films from 45 countries, including 34 world premieres. Spread out over 11 days at more than a dozen venues throughout Miami-Dade County, the Festival attracts thousands of film enthusiasts, industry professionals and global media, positioning the city as a vibrant destination for cinema and the arts as a whole.

In addition to U.S. and world premieres, the Festival elevates emerging and local creatives, helping to cultivate homegrown talent. This year, nine Miami-made films made their debut and competed for the popular “Made in MIA Award.” Meanwhile, students showcased their short films in the popular Cinemaslam competition. The Louies, a new initiative created in partnership with the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Family Foundation, funds local filmmakers who create documentaries exploring South Florida’s history.

In the fall, we turn our attention to the power of reading with the Miami Book Fair. The Fair attracts thousands of global visitors, helping to support Miami’s tourism industry and small businesses, further underscoring MDC’s impact in the region. Beyond the eight-day festival, year-round programming—including The Big Read, creative writing workshops and children’s literacy and learning initiatives such as Books for Free and Speak Up—fosters learning and creativity.

In addition to curating premier art exhibitions at campus galleries, the Museum of Art and Design at MDC hosts artist-led artmaking workshops and activities that are free for the entire family. Meanwhile, the Live Arts Miami series, established over 35 years ago, offers powerful performances by some of the most renowned artists in music, dance and theater.

In Little Havana, the Koubek Center serves as a hub for the Spanish-speaking community. The popular artist-in-residence program, En Residencia, inspires collaboration among local artists and provides studio and classroom space to create new work.

This summer, we’re excited to celebrate the grand reopening and centennial anniversary of our beloved Freedom Tower, a National Historic Landmark and enduring symbol of hope and freedom for so many. The Tower will house the only FIFA Museum exhibit in the U.S., as well as a new visitor experience that chronicles its history, in addition to dedicated gallery spaces.

The Freedom Tower stands as a testament to MDC’s commitment to preserving and promoting the arts, both locally and globally.

In the world’s most inspiring cities, the synergy of arts, culture, talent and education shapes not just skylines but the very soul of a world-class future. At Miami Dade College, we are proud to play a leading role in this dynamic intersection, where creativity and innovation converge to shape the future of South Florida. From the storied halls of the Freedom Tower to the vibrant arts initiatives we champion, MDC continues to foster a legacy of excellence that drives our community forward.
