FLINT, MI – The Cinco de Mayo Celebration scheduled for this weekend in downtown Flint has been canceled due to forecasted inclement weather.
Hosted by the Latinx Technology & Community Center, the annual celebration was set to take place from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, in Brush Park and feature live music, authentic Mexican food, a mariachi band, family-friendly activities, as well as vendors.
The organization shared the news in a Facebook post, saying the decision was made with community safety in mind.
“We’re sad to share that, due to the forecasted inclement weather, we’ve made the difficult decision to cancel our Cinco de Mayo celebration,” the post read. “The safety and comfort of our community are always our top priorities, and we truly appreciate your understanding.”
Asa Zuccaro, executive director of the Latinx Center, confirmed the information on Wednesday, April 30.
The Cinco de Mayo event typically draws hundreds of attendees and celebrates Mexican culture and heritage.
Though widely misunderstood as Mexico’s Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s underdog victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.
The organization said they hope to see the community at a future celebration and encouraged residents to stay tuned for updates.

Those still seeking a celebration can head to the Hispanic Service Center’s fourth annual Cinco de Mayo festival this weekend in Imlay City.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, at the corner of Third and Main streets in the city’s downtown area.

“We are really just passionate about bringing a Hispanic culture to Imlay City, as about 50% of Imlay City is Hispanic,” Hispanic Service Center Director Ashley Bruce said.
This year’s festival will feature Grupo Sin Fronteras, a dance group, and Mexican music performed by Mariachi Cristal.
“I’m told that people really love the performance by the Grupo Fronteras a lot. They’ll come and put on their dance, and a lot of people find it really cute,” Bruce said.
