DENVER – The University of Denver women’s lacrosse team will travel to the Florida Regional as a part of the opening weekend of the national tournament, it was announced during the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday night. The Pioneers will take on the Stanford Cardinal in the first round in Gainesville on Friday, May 9 at 5 p.m. MT
Denver secured an automatic bid into the NCAA postseason by winning the Big East Conference tournament championship on Saturday afternoon in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
All games in the first two rounds will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
DU owns a 18-18 record against the Cardinal, including a 14-9 upset victory in California earlier this season. The two teams were conference foes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation from 2006-2014. The Pioneers have won 10 straight meetings against the Cardinal, including the 2024 NCAA Tournament first round in Evanston.
The Pioneers are in the NCAA Tournament for the seventh straight year and the ninth time in program history.
DU has advanced to the second round in each of its previous eight appearances, reaching the quarterfinals in 2019 against No. 1 Maryland and making its program first championship weekend appearance in 2023 against No. 1 Northwestern. Denver owns a 11-8 all-time record in the national tournament.
Overall, 29 schools are in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship, with 15 earning automatic berths for winning their respective conference tournaments. The other 14 squads are at-large bids. The top three seeds have a bye in the first round.
North Carolina is the No. 1 overall seed, Boston College is second, Northwestern is third and Florida is fourth.
