WILLIAMSBURG — The Colonial Italian American Organization exceeded its fundraising goal for scholarships at its meatball cook-off May 31 at Frothy Moon Brewhouse.
CIAO was established in 1988 initially as a heritage organization for people of Italian origin, be it through family or marriage. Over time, the organization has opened up to anyone interested in anything Italian. Fundraising for this particular event went to scholarships awarded to students in the Hampton Roads area.
The organization’s goal for the event was to have 100 people at the meatball cook-off, and the event saw approximately 120 in attendance, according to club president Carmen Andreoli. He estimated that about $2,400 was raised for the organization’s scholarships.

The first place trophy for the event went to Tony Tutino. The organization said it appreciated the participation of all of the chefs who volunteered their time to the event. Based on the popularity of the cook-off by both members and non-members, the organization hopes to make it an annual event.
Andreali recognized Jackie Findlay, Fundraising Director and Chair of Social Committee, and Anne Lamar for spearheading the event.
