Authorities arrested a man who they say shot a police officer Wednesday afternoon in the Santa Monica Place mall area.

The shooting occurred after a Santa Monica police officer recognized a man wanted in connection with a previous incident, according to Santa Monica Police Department Chief Ramon Batista. Officials did not specify what that prior incident was.

After approaching the man and identifying himself as part of law enforcement, the police officer ran after the man in a brief foot pursuit, then was shot by the suspect. The officer, whose identity has not been shared, suffered a non-life threatening injury.

“One of our officers sustained injuries during the incident and was transported to a local hospital for medical care, where he remains in stable condition,” police said in a statement.

In a post on X, police shared a photo of a man sought in connection with the shooting and a tip from a resident led to the man’s arrest in Santa Monica, according to Batista. Law enforcement did not release the man’s name.

Santa Monica Place is located at the south end of the Third Street Promenade shopping area, blocks from the beach and Santa Monica Pier.

Nearby streets were closed for the investigation.
