MIDLAND ― A local charter school that opened to great fanfare about three years ago has announced its closure.
Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School announced on its website July 30 that its board of trustees will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the school, 7 S. 12th St., Midland, to discuss the closure.
MITCS welcomed its first students in September 2022, offering an alternative educational approach for students interested in pursuing skilled trades. While earning their diploma, students gained licenses and certificates necessary for skilled labor throughout Pennsylvania.
The school has not yet released information on why it is closing, but Lincoln Parks Performing Arts Charter School has stated that it will assist displaced students. The MITCS project was started by a separate entity in Midland, Lincoln Parks Performing Arts Center, in 2017.
Spokesman Jeff Durosko said in a July 30 statement that “the administration, faculty and staff of Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School wishes to stand in solidarity with, and offer its support to, students and families of Midland Innovation and Technology Charter School, who were informed today of the closure of their school.
“The closure of any school is unfortunate; the shuttering of a charter school – especially so close to the beginning of a new school year – is especially sad for those of us in the school choice movement,” he said.
Durosko said Lincoln Park has told the state Department of Education that it will help provide viable educational opportunities to affected students for the 2025-26 school year.
The school has scheduled a special admissions seminar, exclusively for MITCS students and families, available online via Zoom at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 4.At this seminar, arts directors and staff will answer questions about Lincoln Park and how to apply there – a process that will be expedited for MITCS students.
Former MITCS students and families who would like to attend this special admissions seminar need to complete the Admissions Inquiry form on the Lincoln Park website, lppacs.org. A link will be sent to the Zoom meeting Monday morning for those interested.
In addition, Lincoln Park staff will conduct an exclusive tour of campus for MITCS students and families at 5 p.m. Aug. 11. Families who cannot attend the Aug. 4 Zoom meeting, but would like to RSVP for the Aug. 11 tour, can do so by emailing admissions@lppacs.org.
