GALLUP — The Legislative Education Study Committee (LESC) will meet in Gallup at the Gallup-McKinley School District (GMCS) Central Office Sept. 3-5.
On Wednesday, Sept. 3, Public Education Department (PED) Secretary, Mariana Padilla, will present the department’s public school support request (PSSR) for the upcoming legislative session. PED staff will also present the rollout of a statewide student information system.
GMCS will facilitate a community welcome, and LESC will host superintendents from the region in a Q&A panel. The committee will also hear an update on new school board training from PED staff.
On Thursday, Sept. 4, the committee is scheduled to hear a review of Hispanic education and bilingual multicultural education advisory councils. The Legislative Finance Committee (LFC) will review revenue estimates previously introduced at its August hearing in Las Cruces. LESC staff will also present the costs and framework associated with career connected learning (CCL) as well as introduce a possible funding mechanism that may ensure equitable and effective CCL.
Additionally, the committee will take a site visit to Hiroshi Miyamura High School, which emphasizes CCL. The site visit will begin at 1:30 p.m. and will continue until adjournment at 4 p.m.
On Friday, Sept. 5, LFC staff will present an evaluation of the state’s Healthy Universal School Meals program, discussing the funding structure associated with the program, as well as some implementation challenges and promising outcomes. LESC staff will also provide an update on potential federal funding changes.
