Fredericksburg, Va. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men’s tennis team continued play at the ITA Southeast Regional Championship on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Ninth-seeded Max-William Kanz made his tournament debut after earning a first-round bye. He battled Jacob Martin of Randolph College in a three-set thriller. Martin claimed the opening set 7-6 (7-3), but Kanz responded with a 6-2 victory in the second to force the decider. In the tiebreaking frame, Kanz outlasted Martin 12-10 to advance to the Round of 16, where he was later knocked off by fifth-seeded Dylan Blenkiron of Johns Hopkins 7-5, 6-1.
Ian Batra and Tristan Wroe were the lone doubles team to earn a victory Friday. After falling behind 7-3, the duo rallied to force a 7-7 tie and went on to claim the breaker 7-3. Their run ended in the next round with an 8-5 setback to No. 4 Evan Fisher and Trevor Rein of Mary Washington.
Kanz also teamed with Renat Kramin, with the fifth-seeded pair earning a bye into the Round of 32. They battled William Fromherz and John Riordan of Mary Washington but came up short in a narrow 8-7 (7-5) decision.
Samvid Andhare, who advanced past Evan Fisher of Mary Washington on Thursday, faced ninth-seeded Mukundh Boopathi of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 32. The two split sets by identical 6-3 scores before Boopathi prevailed 10-5 in the third.
In doubles, Andhare paired with Dhaivik Chenemilla in the Championship Flight but the duo was edged 8-4 by their Johns Hopkins opponents. In singles play, Kramin earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eli Campbell of Mary Washington in the B1 draw before falling 6-3, 6-2 to Nikita Galov of Swarthmore. Chenemilla picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the opening round of the B2 flight but was eliminated in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-1 by Swarthmore’s Aamish Pal. Wroe also competed in singles, falling 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 to Aron Bursztyn of Salisbury.
In the B1 doubles flight, Elias Alkio and Johnny Haase advanced past their first-round opponents from St. Mary’s (Md.) with an 8-5 victory before dropping an 8-2 decision to Washington College.
