Reacting to LSU football’s loss at Ole Miss
Here’s what stood out from LSU football’s loss at Ole Miss Saturday at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Through the first five games of the season, LSU football looks poised to make the College Football Playoff for the first time in the Garrett Nussmeier and Brian Kelly era.
The question that now sits with the No. 13-ranked Tigers, especially with an inefficient running game and an offense that ranks 13th in the SEC in scoring at 27 points per game, is: Will it actually happen?
It’s likely the million-dollar question that Kelly and Co. are mulling in the Tigers’ facilities during their bye week, after they sustained their first loss of the season last week to then-No. 11 Ole Miss.

Entering its bye week at 4-1, LSU has a 23% chance to make the 12-team College Football Playoff field according to ESPN’s playoff predictor. The Tigers are two wins away from becoming bowl-eligible for the fourth consecutive season under Kelly, who is 33-12 overall in his time in Baton Rouge.
Here’s when the Tigers are set to return, including a look at LSU’s remaining schedule:
Does LSU football play today?
No, LSU is on the first of its two bye weeks of the 2025 college football season. The Tigers return to action next week in Week 7 when they host LaNorris Seller, Shane Beamer and South Carolina at Tiger Stadium.
LSU took last year’s game in Columbia, South Carolina 36-33 after a last-minute touchdown from running back Josh Williams. Next Saturday’s game will be the last between both programs until 2027, as LSU and South Carolina were not paired together by the SEC as annual opponents in the updated nine-game conference schedule format that starts next year.
Next week’s game also starts a three-game stretch for LSU before it goes into its second bye week of the season in Week 10. The stretch includes two big tests for Kelly’s squad, as they are set to have back-to-back ranked games against No. 17 Vanderbilt and No. 5 Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 25, respectively.
