Blown minds, the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’, statue?: College football reacts to Curt Cignetti’s new contract with Indiana

What Curt Cignetti’s new contract with Indiana football means

As his name came up around coaching vacancies, the Hoosiers coach said he was tired of the outside noise. A new deal with IU will help silence that.

You hear about these situations at traditional football powerhouses: A high-profile coaching job comes open, and a school sweetens its coach’s contract to encourage him to stay.

That sort of thing doesn’t happen at Indiana football … until now.

IU extended coach Curt Cignetti’s contract on Thursday, pushing him into the top five salaries nationally. At $11.6 million annually through 2033, Cignetti’s deal pays him more than the coaches at places like Alabama, Miami (Florida), USC, Texas, Notre Dame, etc.

Such a scenario was unthinkable less that two years ago, when Cignetti was making $677,311 at James Madison and IU was on its way to a 3-9 record in Tom Allen’s final season as coach.

Curt Cignetti just released the following video. This is awesome. Everything about his takeover of the program and their rise to becoming one of the nation’s best is awesome. Too early to say they should start working on a statue in Bloomington???pic.twitter.com/XnQk4dl3YK

Curt Cignetti has as good an opportunity to win a national championship with INDIANA FOOTBALL as any other program in college football.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Welcome to the new age.

Cignetti will be 72 in 2033, and he’ll get a statue in Bloomington and nearly $100m if he sustains anything near to this level of success. There’s only a handful of teams that can beat $11.6m/year, and all of them will fire him if he misses a bowl once.

He’s not leaving. https://t.co/wgyNTIPF6V

Two years ago this weekend, Indiana lost to Rutgers on homecoming by 17 points in a 3-9 season, and Curt Cignetti was making $677,311 at James Madison.

Now Cignetti is 17-2 at IU with a Playoff appearance and about to make $11 million annually.

Just a handful of months before turning 50, with a comfortable and well paying assistant job at Alabama, Cignetti decides to bet on himself. He takes a pay cut, jumps down to D2, and has no promises or guarantees that it will ever work out.

Talk about a full circle moment!… https://t.co/YozfXUNKOC
