(New York, NY)—The Center for Community Media (CCM) at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY has received a $750,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, recognizing CCM’s national leadership in strengthening Spanish-language and Latino media outlets through training, mapping, and research.
Based at the Newmark J-School, CCM serves hundreds of community and ethnic media outlets across the U.S., helping them expand audience reach, grow revenue, and build sustainability. Its programs, trainings, and gatherings have provided critical support to – and community building with – the Spanish-language and Latino-serving newsrooms that keep immigrant and bilingual communities informed, including those in the border region of the United States.
“We are very proud to be among the other incredible journalism organizations in this cohort who are serving the information needs of their communities day in and day out,” said Jean Friedman-Rudovsky, Executive Director of the Center for Community Media. “We look forward to supporting their vital work, and continuing to carry our programming and research that strengthens the Latino media sector across the country.”
For almost 10 years, the Newmark J-School has played an essential role in serving Latino media—not only through CCM’s work, but also by training the next generation of bilingual journalists and newsroom leaders through the nation’s first master’s in Bilingual Journalism Program. Hundreds of bilingual journalists are now positioned with professional and cultural skills to produce rigorous reporting, on deadline, in both languages, while fostering a deep understanding of the richness and complexity of the U.S. Latino experience. Last month, the J-School announced its new online bilingual master’s program, to begin in January 2026. As one of the most accessible graduate journalism programs in the country, the school provides pathways for first-generation students and emerging reporters committed to serving underrepresented communities.
