After spending nearly a century at the Jersey Shore, the historic Phoenix Wheel is set to return to Phoenixville next spring.
A historic 78-foot Ferris wheel, dubbed the Phoenix Wheel, is set to return home to Phoenixville next spring, reports the Phoenixville Regional Chamber of Commerce.
The historic Phoenix Bridge Company, a subsidiary of Phoenix Iron Works, originally built the iron components to the wheel over a century ago. The wheel served as a popular attraction at the Jersey Shore for nearly one hundred years from 1895 through 1988.
Now, the wheel will return to its namesake place of origin as a new tourist attraction.
The Schuylkill River Heritage Center (SRHC) is organizing the Phoenix Wheel’s grand return to Chester County. Restoration and relocation of the wheel will cost an estimated $2 million.
Local welding company Specialty Metals will manage the restoration and reassembly process.
After considering several possible locations, the wheel will stand next to Phoenixville’s Township Building and the French Creek Trail. Lights, glass fencing, and informational signs will make the new attraction shine.
SRHC President Barbara Cohen spoke about the significance of the wheel returning home to Chester County. Cohen described the wheel’s restoration as “more than just restoring an artifact. It’s about community, heritage, resilience, and the power of preserving Phoenixville’s unique history for future generations.”
