The Boston Red Sox lost Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs and may be looking to pivot to add an impact bat to their lineup before opening day.
Craig Breslow had made it known he wanted to add another impact bat to the Red Sox lineup after acquiring Willson Contreras. He was hoping to do that with Bregman, but he is off the board. However, there are still options for the Red Sox in free agency. Eugenio Suárez could be a fit.
Prediction: Red Sox sign Eugenio Suárez to a two-year, 28 million deal with an opt-out after Year 1
Suárez should not require a long-term commitment. He is going into his 13th season and is 34 years old. He hit 49 home runs last season and was the hottest name on the trade block at the trade deadline. He was dealt to the Seattle Mariners, but did not hit well, with the Mariners pitcher friendly ballpark likely playing a role.
Fenway Park is much more friendly to right-handed hitters than T-Mobile Park. Not only could Suárez bring power to the offense, but he could fill in directly for Bregman at third base. With Bregman gone, Marcelo Mayer figures to play third base, leaving the Red Sox with a likely platoon at second base.
However, if they add Suárez, he could play third base with Mayer at second base. Additionally, the Red Sox figure to have Kristian Campbell back in the fold at second base at some point, so he and Mayer could share the spot while they both develop. Since Suárez would be on a short-term deal, Mayer and Campbell could start at third base and second base, respectively, next season.
