In no way, shape, or ice cream cone-form did Ronnie Selinger expect to be running a technology company.
In fact, his first business was a Baskin Robbins franchise in North Miami Beach, which he bought from his father at 22. But when a high school student walked into the ice cream shop selling ad space on the back of a discount card, it sparked an idea that would eventually lead to the creation of Nordis Technologies – a Broward-based company now processing hundreds of millions of critical business communications annually.
That day, Selinger’s entrepreneurial instincts kicked in immediately. He saw how the discount card brought in new customers and recognized its potential as a fundraising tool for schools. Teaming up with ad man Sid Bloom, they turned the idea into a nationwide business, helping schools generate revenue through sponsorship-driven discount cards. Over the next decade, their venture expanded to over 2,000 schools, supported by a network of sales reps across the country.
While growing the fundraising business, Selinger encountered a challenge familiar to many entrepreneurs: unreliable vendors. Outsourcing their direct mail operations led to errors and inefficiencies, prompting him to bring the process in-house. What started as a way to ensure quality control eventually became the foundation of Nordis Technologies.
“We didn’t set out to start a mailing business, it just made sense to do it ourselves,” Selinger told Refresh Miami. “But once we had the infrastructure in place, we realized we could offer the same service to others.”
Nordis quickly evolved beyond direct mail. A major turning point came when Wyndham Resorts, one of its clients, needed help managing their compliance-driven communications, including mortgage and HOA statements.
Selinger saw an opportunity to develop a technology solution that would automate complex document workflows and provide clients with greater control over their communications. That vision led to the creation of Expresso, Nordis’s flagship communication management platform.
“Expresso wasn’t just about printing and mailing, it was about giving companies the tools to manage their communications efficiently,” he said. “We made it customer-facing so they could control updates in real-time without relying on third parties.”
Today, Nordis is a powerhouse in critical communications, serving over 150 clients across healthcare, hospitality, and financial services. With 175 employees and production facilities in both Coral Springs and Las Vegas, the company prints and mails up to 400 million pages annually, alongside a rapidly growing volume of digital communications.
Technology has remained central to Nordis’s success. While many competitors focus solely on print and mail, Expresso’s workflows enable companies to send communications through email, text, and traditional mail – automatically adjusting based on customer preferences and engagement.
“If a customer doesn’t open an email within 48 hours, our system can automatically trigger a printed version,” Selinger explained. “It ensures that critical communications actually reach the recipient, reducing missed payments and service disruptions.”
Looking ahead, Nordis is expanding into new verticals, including insurance, property management, and collections. The company is also investing in AI-driven analytics to help clients optimize their communication strategies and improve payment rates.
As Selinger reflects on his journey from an ice cream shop owner to a tech entrepreneur, he attributes Nordis’s growth to a combination of vision, adaptability, and strong leadership.
“The universe has helped when we needed it, but we’ve also built a team that embraces change and stays ahead of industry trends,” he said. “Our goal has always been to make communications simpler and more effective. That’s what drives us.”
