But the technology kept evolving. First there were portable laptops and tablets, then finally the smartphone that you can take almost anywhere. Raise your hand if you’re like me and the first thing you reach for in the morning is your phone.
A reader told me that reading the paper online isn’t the same as when he sits on his front porch and spreads it out. For years, my morning ritual was to read my paper at the kitchen table while I enjoyed coffee and breakfast.
Now, I still enjoy coffee and breakfast, but I peruse my phone or my home laptop.
I wish we could have a printed newspaper every day of the week, but that business model is cost prohibitive. I’d rather have reporters that can go out and gather news.
A few years ago, it would have been hard to believe many folks have cut the cord, so to speak, on their landline phones and their cable television. But that’s the reality. A cellphone eliminates the need for a house phone in many cases, and streaming services are rising in popularity as viewers enjoy the portability versus traditional cable.
While we are changing the amount of days we will offer a print product, we don’t have plans to skimp on content. In fact, we plan to offer even more.
We are adding several new features, and we will double up on comics and puzzles in the print edition so no one misses out.
Our hope is that these changes will be helpful to readers. For example, grocery store inserts will now appear on Tuesdays ahead of Wednesday’s big shopping day. The weekend edition, which now comes out Friday, will have info on open houses, yard sales and other events that occur on the weekends. It also will have the popular entertainment/TV guide.
Many people say that they don’t want to go digital or don’t have the know-how or expertise. But I’m here to tell you that many folks, who are a generation older than me, have already taken the plunge and gone fully digital.
