San Antonio is getting sweeter, as a family-owned chain expands its frozen footprint in the Alamo City.
The popular chain has 140 locations across 14 states, with the first San Antonio location opening in 2022 at The Rim shopping center.
The concept was started in Missouri in 1986 by John and Carol Kuntz, who were hooked on frozen custard after trying the delicacy in Wisconsin. The couple decided to name the custard shop after their son, who now runs the business as both its owner and CEO.
“We couldn’t be happier to bring Andy’s to Alamo Heights,” Andy Kuntz said in a release. “Our team is ready to welcome neighbors and dessert lovers alike to enjoy our signature frozen custard, seasonal specials, and all the joy that comes with every scoop.”
The shop is relatively new to Texas, with the first Lone Star State location opening in 2016. It’s become a sweet staple in the South and Southwest, distinct from ice cream as egg yolks are used in the base milk. The result is a thicker and creamier dessert.
Andy’s Frozen Custard comes in vanilla or chocolate, though it can be customized with toppings like candy pieces, Oreos, roasted pecans and fresh fruit. The shop also offers rotating specials, like sundaes, splits and pints.
The Alamo Heights location is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., staying open until midnight on Friday and Saturday.
