This month features readings, slams, discussions, and immersive poetic experiences.

SAN ANTONIO (April 1, 2025) – This April, the City of San Antonio and San Antonio Poet Laureate Eddie Vega invite the entire community to participate in National Poetry Month.

“The universe is bringing us all the joy it can muster — Easter, Fiesta, National Poetry Month — all in the month of April,” said Vega. “Something poetic is happening in this city every day from April and even into May. There are readings, workshops, writers’ groups. There’s a slam bringing poets from all over Texas, a pachanga for poets, book launches and open mics, and it all starts with VIVA Poesía.”

This year’s celebration features more than 40 events, with VIVA Poesía: Palabras, Música, y Cultura serving as the official kickoff. Presented by the City’s World Heritage Office, this special event takes place on Saturday, April 5 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the historic Mission Marquee Plaza (3100 Roosevelt Ave). It features poets plus visual artists, dancers, and performance groups. The theme for the event is “Ónce Pon a Time at the Mission Marquee!” a nod to the event’s 11th year and a review of the past decade.

“We are excited to celebrate more than a decade of creativity and inspiration with Viva Poesía,” said Director of the World Heritage Office Colleen Swain. “This year’s theme reflects the past 10 years, showcasing the incredible journey we’ve taken towards fostering a vibrant artistic culture in San Antonio. We invite everyone to join us in honoring our past while looking forward to a future filled with poetic expression and connection to San Antonio’s heritage and culture.”

Launched by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, National Poetry Month is one of the largest literary celebrations in the world. The City joined National Poetry Month in 2009 to raise awareness about the importance of poetry.

“As we celebrate National Poetry Month, we honor the power of words to inspire, challenge, and unite our community through the timeless art of poetry,” said Department of Arts & Culture Director Krystal Jones. “Poetry holds a vital role in San Antonio’s culture year-round, but it’s in April that the city’s many talented poets really come to the forefront.”
