Atlanta — Jan 14, 2026

(ATLANTA – January 14, 2026) The Atlanta Regional Commission announced today that nine communities – Douglas County, Cobb County and the cities of Atlanta, Avondale Estates, Mableton, Milton, Norcross, Roswell, and Woodstock – have been certified through the agency’s Green Communities program for demonstrating leadership in sustainability practices.

ARC developed the Green Communities Program in 2009 to certify local governments that invest in programs and policies that lead to a more sustainable region. The nationally recognized program showcases the many ways that local governments can reduce their environmental footprint.

“For jurisdictions to voluntarily submit to certify as Green Communities by lightening their environmental footprint is a testament to their commitment to fostering greener, healthier, and more livable communities,” said Anna Roach, ARC Executive Director & CEO. “Congratulations to all those receiving certifications and increasing the quality of life for their community.”

Communities work diligently earning credits in areas of measurement such as constructing green buildings, implementing water conservation measures, and protecting tree canopies. Communities continue to rise to the occasion, implementing new trendsetting measures, moving through the levels ranging from Bronze to Platinum.

This year, nine communities were recognized, including two new communities.

The Green Communities honorees achieved the following certification levels:

  • City of Atlanta – Recertified Platinum
  • City of Avondale Estates – Certified Bronze (new Green Community)
  • Cobb County – Recertified Platinum
  • Douglas County – Recertified Silver
  • City of Mableton – Certified Silver (new Green Community)
  • City of Milton – Recertified Gold
  • City of Norcross – Recertified Platinum
  • City of Roswell – Recertified Platinum
  • City of Woodstock – Recertified Gold

In metro Atlanta, 24 local governments — 18 cities and six counties — are currently certified under ARC’s Green Communities program. The program was the first in the country to promote sustainability through a green certification program for local governments.
