Stagg graduate and Hickory Hills native Max Strus injured his right foot in the preseason opener for his new team – the Los Angeles Clippers.

Strus, 30, suffered a plantar fascia partial tear on Oct. 3 against Golden State in Hawaii and is being ruled out for the rest of the preseason and start of the regular season. He will be reevaluated in late October or early November.

“(He’s a) guy that was shot-ready at all times, when he was on the floor,” Clippers coach Ty Lue told reporters. “Guys had to stay closer to him. We are going to miss him tremendously.”

Strus missed the first 67 games of last season with a left foot fracture when he was with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Days prior to the current injury, he was pumped up to try to help a Clippers team that finished 42-40 last year but missed the playoffs.

“I’ve been a part of winning everywhere I’ve gone,” Strus told reporters. “That’s all I’ve been around. I have a lot of experience and I know what it takes to win in this league and I’m just going to bring that on a daily basis.”

Reavis grad leads SXU

Reavis graduate Charles Campbell had two catches for St. Xavier on Oct. 10 and they were huge.

The redshirt junior had touchdown catches of a school-record-tying 99 and 64 yards in the Cougars’ 20-7 homecoming win over Lawrence Tech in a Mid-States Football Association crossover game in Chicago. Former Mount Carmel standout Blainey Dowling threw for 290 yards and three TDs against Lawrence (2-4).

The Cougars begin MSFA-Midwest play at noon Oct. 17 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (0-5) in Indiana.

Lions roar at state golf

Lyons did not qualify for the Class 3A state golf meet as a team, but three individuals made noise Oct. 9-10 at the Den at Fox Lake Golf Course in Bloomington.

Lyons seniors Ben Hare and Charlie Forrest tied for 11th place with 147s and junior Cohen Bloomfield was not far behind with a 149 to tie for 18th.

A first for Argo tennis

Argo’s girls tennis team won the South Suburban Red championship and for the first time in team history, the Argonauts did it with a clean sweep.

Gabija Skendelis and Mary Gasienica Daniel won at singles, while the doubles teams of Anna Medygral-Veronica Skubisz, Abbi Grenier-Sam Romanyuk and Eliana Zuniga and Karolina Ciezak also took first.

Hail Haile

The Chicago Fire signed winger Maren Haile-Selassie through the 2028-29 season on Oct. 9 and the next day, he scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 win over New York City in an MLS game at Soldier Field.

After the 43-minute mark, the Fire played down a man when Dje D’Avilla was ejected but still pulled off the victory.

On Oct. 7, the team stunned Western Conference leader Vancouver 3-1 at Soldier Field with Jonathan Bamba, Philip Zinckernagel and Haile-Selassie scoring goals.

The Fire (14-8-6) were scheduled to host Philadelphia Oct. 14 and is slated to visit New England at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 17.

Lions flag still alive
