LITTLE ROCK, AR (KATV) — The Arkansas Highway Police is stepping up its game with a new form of camera technology for the work zone to spot drivers using handheld devices, like cell phones, while driving.
AHP Chief Jeff Holmes explained, “It is against Arkansas law to use a handheld device in a work zone.”
He added that the hands-free law has been tough to enforce until now, but this tech will help keep road workers and travelers safer.
The cameras, already used for catching speeders, will now also detect phone usage, according to a release.
However, an officer must be present to issue a warning or ticket.
Signs will alert drivers when they’re entering a monitored work zone.
ARDOT Director Jared Wiley emphasized, “Safety is our top priority at ARDOT,” noting that the new technology is a valuable tool for enforcing safety laws.
