After opening Ferndale’s Mezcal Mexican Bar & Kitchen in 2021, sibling owners Sandra Haro and Jose Granados are expanding with a new venture.

Balam Coffee & Wine is getting ready to open to the public on Monday, March 16 at 207 E. Nine Mile Rd., Ferndale, not far from their restaurant.

A press release describes the concept as “a café, wine bar and gathering space.” It offers Mexican-inspired coffees like a marzipan-flavored drink or the Chocolate Abuelita, made with Mexican hot chocolate and cinnamon, in addition to a rtotating selection of Latin American wines.

The menu will also include Mexican pastries, wraps, and juices.

“Our goal with Balam is to create something that feels different but familiar,” Granados said in a statement. “It’s a place to slow down, enjoy great coffee or wine, and experience flavors tied to Latin American culture.”

The name comes from the Mayan word for “jaguar,” which the press release calls “the most sacred and powerful animal in Mesoamerican mythology” that “represents a complex blend of physical ferocity, spiritual protection and divine authority.”

“The jaguar is a protector and a strong animal in the culture,” Haro said in a statement. “That meaning resonated with us as we thought about creating a space that feels welcoming, intentional and rooted in our heritage.”

The siblings say that the space is “a reflection” of their childhoods and travels in Mexico, and the coffee and decor was sourced from there.

The new space can seat around 30 guests.

Mezcal Mexican Bar & Kitchen has locations in Ferndale, Detroit, and Dearborn.
