DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF) — The President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) serving Dayton and the Miami Valley died over the weekend.
According to a spokesperson with the BBB, John North passed away on Sunday.
North served the BBB as the President and CEO since 2007, where he motivated and inspired his team to new levels of success. In this capacity, North won several awards and worked as a leader to create programs and services for businesses and consumers. These efforts have been recognized at the national level.
Furthermore, the spokesperson said that BBB-Dayton, under North’s leadership, has been a global resource, as about half of the BBBs across the system contract with it for products and services.
North was inducted into the Dayton Magazine’s Business Hall of Fame in 2025 for his accomplishments in business.
Before joining the BBB, North was active in the health and human services field, securing his first job as a prevention specialist with Unified Health Solutions, a local nonprofit. Soon after, he was selected to serve as the nonprofit’s President and CEO in 1998. The spokesperson said that he grew the agency by securing the financial resources needed to carry out his mission.
North was born and raised in Dayton, graduating from Wright State University with a bachelor’s degree in social and industrial communication and a master’s degree in public administration.
While serving the BBB, he was also a member of the Board Operating Committee (BOC), Audit and Compliance Committee and chair of the Training and Development Committee. Furthermore, North also served on the International Association of Better Business Bureau Excellence Committee, made up of a team of BBB leaders nationwide that strive to enhance the BBB and its operations.
Maha Kashani, BBB Board of Directors chair, remembers North as an advocate for doing things the right way.
“John North was more than a leader he was a trusted friend, mentor and a tireless advocate for doing business the right way,” she said. “His vision and unwavering commitment to ethics have left a lasting mark on our business community and will continue to guide us for years to come. On behalf of the Board, we extend our deepest condolences to John’s family and to all whose lives were touched by his remarkable leadership, friendship and service.”
The BBB Board of Directors has appointed Christy Mauch, the Vice President of Operations, to oversee the organization during this time of transition.
