OXFORD, Ohio – Sun Devil Hockey (3-4-0, 1-0-0 NCHC) opened conference play by downing Miami 4-1 (EN) to pick up its first road win of the season. The Redhawks (6-1-0, 0-1-0 NCHC) were the only remaining undefeated team across the NCAA headed into the night. Freshman Jack Beck recorded his first career NCAA goal with just 57 seconds left in regulation to put the final touches on the Arizona State win.

After 40 professional games between the American Hockey League (AHL) and ECHL in 2024-25, Beck made the decision to waive his draft rights and join the Sun Devils. The Ontario native made his NCAA debut on Friday night after a six-game suspension due to eligibility rules and delivered in a huge way.

Beck’s lamplighter gave ASU a two-goal lead with just mere seconds to play in regulation. In Miami’s last-ditch empty net efforts, Calgary Flames draftee Cullen Potter found the open cage to push ASU over the edge and round out a 4-1 victory.

Co-Captain Bennett Schimek turned in his strongest game of the season, racking up three points (1G, 2A) as he buried the first goal of the night prior to setting up Sean McGurn for a beautiful goal of his own.

McGurn’s highlight reel goal marked the fourth multi-point game in just seven games for Schimek, as he would later assist on Beck’s game-sealer to secure a three-point game and bring his team-best point total to 10.

Goaltender Connor Hasley remained steady, stopping 19 of 20 Redhawk shots on goal to keep them at bay throughout the evening and earn his second win of the season between the pipes. In his efforts, Hasley has now surpassed 2,000 career saves between his time at ASU and Bentley.

The Sun Devils and Redhawks will battle on Saturday afternoon at 3:05 MST / 5:05 CST as ASU sets its sights on the series sweep to begin NCHC play.

GAME NOTABLES

  • ASU recorded its third straight win at Miami, which now improves the all-time record against the RedHawks to 3-1.
  • Miami lost its first game of the season after being the lone undefeated team in the nation.
  • The Sun Devils scored 2+ PPG for the second time this season, after recording 5 against Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 11 (W, 5-2)
  • ASU’s top two lines of Beck-Potter-Waldron and Lucius-McGurn-Schimek recorded 9 points combined.
  • Schimek’s three-point effort was the first of his career as a Sun Devil and the fourth of his NCAA career between ASU and Providence
  • Schimek now holds a team lead of 10 points in 7 games (1.43 PPG).
  • Cruz Lucius picked up his fourth straight game with a point, and now his second straight multi-point game with two assists on the night to slot him at 9 points in 7 games (1.29 PPG)
  • The 9 points in 7 games for Lucius have him primed to shatter his point total of 10 in 19 games a season ago.
  • Connor Hasley recorded his 2,000th save of his career
  • Jack Beck notched his first career NCAA goal in his first career NCAA game.
  • Sean McGurn stayed dominant at the faceoff circle, notching a .667 FO% to bring his season percentage to .652 at the dot
  • The Sun Devils had eight power play opportunities, the second most of the season right behind nine against Alaska Fairbanks on Oct. 11, 2025
  • Defenseman Brasen Boser made his season debut after missing the first six due to injury.
  • Freshman defenseman Richard Baran recorded his first-career NCAA point, picking up an assist on Potter’s empty net goal
  • Miami transfer Johnny Walker recorded his first point as a Sun Devil, also recording an assist on Potter’s goal.
  • Cullen Potter netted his first goal of the 2025-26 season

PERIOD BY PERIOD BREAKDOWN
First Period
The RedHawks struck first with a power-play goal just two minutes into the action to give them the early 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils remained resilient despite getting behind, as Schimek ripped a power-play goal of his own to knot things up at one a piece. A little over two minutes later, Schimek and McGurn executed a give-and-go play to perfection, resulting in a perfect feed from Schimek right on the tape of McGurn to find the back of the net and make it 2-1.

Second Period
The two sides had a lot of chances on special teams, but neither could capitalize on them. The period went scoreless as the Sun Devils headed back to the visitors dressing room with the score remaining the same as when they left it, 2-1.

Third Period
In another penalty-riddled period, ASU and Miami could not find the back of the net despite a handful of opportunities. Miami began to surge as its goaltender was relieved in favor of an extra-skater with a little under two minutes to play. A timely penalty put the Sun Devils on the man-advantage with 1:00 to play. After a successful faceoff win from Schimek, Beck glided to the middle of the ice and fired off a wrister right past the Miami netminder to all but seal a Sun Devil win on an incredibly timely first career NCAA goal. The RedHawks once again pulled their goalie in hopes of a miracle, but Potter found the empty night to put a bow on the Sun Devils first conference win of the season.
