More than cupcakes, 21 years of Miami memoriesFrom a Miami mom’s kitchen to a South Florida institutionOpenings, closings, and the final storefrontsMiami is heartbroken over the newsOne last chance to get Misha’s Cupcakes

For anyone who grew up in Miami, particularly in Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Kendall, South Miami, Shenandoah, or Pinecrest, Misha’s Cupcakes wasn’t just a cupcake shop. It was a part of growing up.

It was the little box of cupcakes your mom brought home after school. The colorful treats at birthday parties. The cupcakes you begged your mom to buy at the checkout at Milam’s Market or the local sub shop. For an entire generation of Miami kids, those little cupcakes were practically a childhood staple.

And now, after 21 years of making Miami a little sweeter, Misha’s Cupcakes is saying goodbye for good.

On Wednesday, October 21, founder Misha Kuryla shared an emotional Instagram Reel announcing the end of her beloved cupcake business. This isn’t just another storefront closure or temporary goodbye; it’s the end of Misha’s Cupcakes altogether.

“I can’t believe I’m saying this, but after 21 years, Misha’s Cupcakes is signing off,” Kuryla says, visibly emotional as she addresses the customers who have supported her for more than two decades.

For longtime Miamians who grew up with her cupcakes, the news is heartbreaking.

Misha’s Cupcakes meant so much to those of us who grew up in Miami during the 2000s and 2010s.

More than cupcakes, 21 years of Miami memories

In her farewell video, Kuryla reflected on the countless celebrations her business has been part of since 2005.

“You as fans have been part of everything,” she says, recalling baby showers, weddings, milestones, and promotions. “We’ve gotten to see families grow.”

She also remembered the quieter moments, when someone simply needed a cupcake to brighten an otherwise difficult day. “Knowing that we could bring smiles to people’s lives and, in turn, you all have given me so many memories and opportunities,” she says. “I don’t know how to thank everybody enough.”

Long before Miami became a city of flashy Greek frozen yogurt shops and Instagram-worthy bakeries, there was Misha’s.

It’s difficult to explain just how much Misha’s Cupcakes meant to those of us who grew up in Miami during the 2000s and 2010s.

Long before Miami became a city of flashy Greek frozen yogurt shops and Instagram-worthy bakeries, there was Misha’s. Its miniature cupcakes, piled high with colorful frosting, became fixtures at school celebrations and family gatherings across South Florida.

I still remember going with my mom to Misha’s Cupcakes after she’d pick me up from middle school. Even years later, seeing those familiar cupcakes lined up near the checkout counter at Milam’s Market always brought back those memories.

That’s what made Misha’s special. You didn’t need a birthday or a big occasion to enjoy one. Sometimes, just seeing those tiny bites covered in pastel frosting was enough to make an ordinary afternoon feel a little sweeter.

From a Miami mom’s kitchen to a South Florida institution

Misha’s Cupcakes began in 2005, when Kuryla was home with her infant daughter, Ella, and heard a news report about a booming cupcake business in California. Already passionate about baking, she decided to try making cupcakes in her own kitchen.

What started as homemade treats for friends and family quickly grew into something much bigger. After donating cupcakes to a charity event, Kuryla connected with her first wholesale customer, setting her on a path toward becoming a household name across Miami.

In 2007, she opened a kiosk at Dadeland Mall, followed by her first storefront in Coral Gables in 2008. That same year, Misha’s Cupcakes won New Times’ Best Cupcakes.

By 2015, Misha’s had expanded to multiple locations across Miami-Dade and Broward counties, with more than 36 cupcake flavors and wholesale distribution at stores including Whole Foods and Milam’s Market.

The 2025 flagship along U.S. 1 had ample room for seating and plenty of cupcake-viewing.

Openings, closings, and the final storefronts

In 2024, Kuryla opened a flagship bakery in the former Swensen’s space in Coral Gables, hoping to create a gathering place where families could watch cupcakes being decorated and enjoy the smell of freshly baked treats.

“We tried to keep a little bit of Swensen’s in there since there are so many wonderful memories from the community,” Kuryla told New Times at the time. She then announced the closure of her London Square location in December 2025.

After closing her flagship storefront in May 2026, Kuryla opened a pop-up in Coral Gables, giving fans another chance to enjoy their favorite cupcakes. But Wednesday’s announcement confirmed this goodbye is more than just a bakery closing.

After 21 years, Misha’s Cupcakes is ending its run for good.

The comments section filled with messages from devastated customers

Miami is heartbroken over the news

Within minutes of Kuryla posting her farewell video, the comments section filled with messages from devastated customers, fellow business owners, and longtime supporters who couldn’t imagine Miami without her cupcakes.

“There are no better cupcakes in Miami – if not the planet – than Misha’s. My heart hurts,” wrote one fan, pleading for Kuryla to pass down her recipe.

Another recalled discovering the brand at its original Dadeland Mall kiosk. “The first time I ever tried your cupcakes was at a small kiosk in front of the Dadeland Mall food court,” the commenter wrote.

Others shared how deeply intertwined Misha’s had become with their family traditions. “You have been a staple in every family gathering since you opened,” one customer wrote, recalling birthdays and baby showers. “Thank you for bringing sweetness to our lives.”

Another fan summed up what so many South Floridians were feeling: “Noo I can’t even imagine Miami without you! My go-to every time I check out at Milam’s.”

One particularly touching message came from someone who credited Kuryla with offering support early in their career. “There are not enough words to say thank you for everything you did for me when I was starting out,” the commenter wrote, thanking her for the kindness and friendship she had shown over the years.

Other comments included “I’ve had many birthdays and occasions with your amazing cupcakes!! Thank you!!” and “NO!!! We will miss you! I can’t believe it’s been 21 delicious years!”

One supporter called Kuryla a “POWERHOUSE,” adding that the entrepreneur had inspired her for years.

The outpouring of love reminds us that Misha’s Cupcakes was never just about selling dessert. Kuryla built a business that became part of people’s lives, one celebration at a time.

One last chance to get Misha’s Cupcakes

For anyone hoping to taste Misha’s Cupcakes one last time, there is still a little time. Kuryla announced that cupcakes will be available at Clementine’s Wine Gourmet, 2714 Ponce de Leon Blvd. in Coral Gables, for the rest of October.

“Before we go, we will have cupcakes at Clementine’s throughout October, and we’d love for you to stop by and have another cupcake,” she says in her farewell video. “I want to thank you all for being a part of my life, and I love you, and I wish you all a great life with love and laughter and plenty of reasons to celebrate.”

“This is Misha and Misha’s Cupcakes signing off.”

For 21 years, Misha’s was there for Miami’s birthdays, graduations, and everyday little victories. Her cupcakes watched children grow up, families expand, and generations of Miamians make memories around the dessert table.

And for those of us who grew up with those little cupcakes, it’s hard to imagine walking through Milam’s or driving down Ponce de Leon Boulevard knowing they won’t be there anymore.

Thank you, Misha, for making our Miami childhoods a little sweeter.
