The Celtics released reserve point guard JD Davison on Thursday, the team announced. The move brings Boston down to 14 players on their 15-man roster.
Boston picked up a $2.3 million team option on the point guard on June 29 but the contract was non-guaranteed. By releasing Boston now, the team absorbs no cap hit for next season.
The Celtics signed Davison back in April to the 15-man roster spot after he spent three years as a two-way player. He had a standout season in the G-League during the 2024-25 season, winning the G-League MVP while splitting time between Maine and Boston. He also took part in the Rising Stars challenge at All-Star weekend.
Ultimately, Davison was a long shot to make the roster though given the team’s cap situation. By releasing him now, Boston drops back under the second apron, which opens the door for much more trade flexibility for the team for any potential moves. Davison also gets a better chance chance to find a new home by being let go now as opposed to being released during training camp.
The 22-year-old guard has appeared in 36 NBA games over the last three seasons, averaging 2.1 points and 0.9 assists per game. Boston selected Davison with the No. 53 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He did not take part in NBA Summer League with the team this summer.
